Aroma: Spearmint + Blueberry | Palate: Fernet Branca + Red Currant

100% Schiopettino from Heathcote, VIC

After becoming almost extinct in the early 20th Century, Schioppettino was lovingly revived in the 1970s and now flourishes mostly in Prepotto along the Judrio Valley close to the Slovenian border in the warm, temperate and rainy Colli Orientali del Friuli. Think of Schioppettino as a cross between Syrah and Cabernet Franc; This delicate variety is prized for its overt and distinctive white pepper and spice and firm but fine tannins. It’s naturally high in rotundone, the compound found in black pepper. It has a distinct peppercorn character, along with floral and green herbal notes. In this expression from Blood Moon, bunches were destemmed, leaving the berries as intact as possible. Wild yeasts were allowed to complete the fermentation, with the cap being rolled under the juice by hand once a day for 22 days, before being pressed to old neutral French oak barrels. There have been no additions to this wine, and there has been no fining or filtration.
