Chapoutier ‘Les Tanneurs’ 2016 – Saint-Peray

Marsanne from Saint-Peray, Rhone, France

Sourdough Bread, D’Anjou Pear and Nut Butter

Complex and a bit savoury. One of the coolest wines we’ve come across. Definitely drinking this with a  Vegemite and Cheese Ravioli.

The Saint-Péray AOC produces exclusively white wine and sparkling wine using the two permitted grape varieties Marsanne and Roussanne. Saint-Péray was one of the first nine declared AOCs in France in 1936. Saint-Péray, the southernmost appellation in the Northern Rhône valley, may nowadays be a relatively unknown wine-making area, but in the 19th Century its white and sparkling wines were revered by royalty including Russian Tsars and Queen Victoria. It is the second smallest AOC in the Rhône valley.  The wine is fermented at low-temperature to preserve the fruit character then aged on lees with regular stirrings to enhance the complexity that marsanne can sometimes lack.
