Bordeaux is world renowned for red varietals, with 90% of the wine in the region made being from these grapes. Most famous is their namesake Bordeaux blend, which is made up of native grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Whilst in Bordeaux (depending which side of the river Gironde you are on) the blends are dominated by either the full bodied and rich Cabernet Sauvignon or the much loved Merlot, this blend by Cullen is made up of 57% Malbec, 37% Petit Verdot and only 6% Merlot. All the fruit is Organic and was farmed Biodynamically from the Mangan Vineyard, with a lunar eclipse occurring during harvest. After fermentation the wine saw 9 months in French oak with 10% new oak. The commanding Malbec brings together a full body with the bold fruit flavours of red plum and blackberry with vanilan cedar and a smooth savoury finish. Petit Verdot plus a little Merlot add aromas of black cherry with floral notes and earthy green herbs, more dried herbs on the palate followed by supple tannin. Whilst not necessarily made to be stylistically representative of the traditional Bordeaux blend, Red Moon is made by one of the greatest winemakers in Australia, who has created an vibrant, energetic wine, which is enjoyable with or without food or further aging.
