Description

The maritime climate of the Geelong wine region lends itself particularly well to Chardonnay and Shiraz, along with some excellent examples of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. Banks Road Estate is located a 20 mins drive from Geelong, down towards Queenscliff. It is a family-run, small production winery, first established in 2002 by William and Avanelle Derham who planted the first 5 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay before expanding to Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. They produce wines under several different labels, from the accessible Yarram Creek Range, to the more premium Soho Road Range, which is made from fruit grown at the Soho Road Vineyard 5km away. The Soho road vineyard, focuses on growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir organically, sheep graze in the vineyard throughout the colder months providing fertiliser, reducing weeds and the need for the use of chemicals. The fruit for this Pinot Noir was hand-picked, 20% whole bunch, 80% whole berry, it saw 12 months in French oak. Resulting in an expression which is rich with aromas of bright cherry, dried herbs and spice. A powerful feisty palate of full dark cherry and berry flavours with a gentle hint of mushroom and forest floor, a silky textural feel with polished tannins and an elongated aftertaste.
