Ros Ritchie Gewurztraminer 2023

Gewürztraminer is a fragrant grape variety primarily used in white wines and thrives in cooler climates.

This particular estate-produced wine is rich in aromas, featuring notes of tea rose, ginger spice, lychee, quince, and orange zest. Its flavours are enhanced by a subtle acidity, offering remarkable length and texture.  It was handpicked from rows 5-27 of the Dead Man’s Hill Vineyard at Mansfield, Victoria.

About Ros Ritchie

After gaining valuable experience over two vintages in Rutherglen and McLaren Vale, along with 25 years at Delatite, Ros established her own winemaking venture and label in Mansfield in 2008. Soon after, she and her husband John moved their operations to custom-designed cellars on Barwite Vineyards, which overlook the Broken River close to Mansfield.  Ros and John are partners in Barwite Vineyard, which grows the fruit for their sparkling base, chardonnay, riesling, pinot grigio and now shiraz; the Dead Man’s Hill vineyard in the county of Delatite, which is planted solely to gewürztraminer and inherited by Ros in 2009, makes both her dry and sweeter gewurz’s.

Dead Man’s Hill Vineyard

In February 2009, Ros inherited the esteemed Dead Man’s Hill vineyard and has been crafting her acclaimed gewürztraminer from this site since 2012. Situated just under 500 meters above sea level, the vineyard is entirely dedicated to gewürztraminer, originally planted by Ros’s father, Robert Ritchie, in 1975 and 1977. The vineyard has rich soils, with vines established without supplementary irrigation, growing on their own roots. Ros rejuvenated the vineyard to be dryland grown, resulting in small yields of about one tonne per acre, yielding tiny, intensely aromatic, and flavourful fruit.
