Welshmans Reef Durif 2020

This wine presents a younger, fresher take on the typically full-bodied Durif, crafted to serve as an Aperitif that can be enjoyed on its own, without the need for food pairings.

Durif was first discovered in France in the mid-1800s and made its debut in Australia in 1908 when it was planted in the Rutherglen region of Victoria. The warmer and drier climate of inland Victoria provides an ideal environment for the Durif grape.

Characterized as a spicy and intensely flavored, full-bodied wine, Durif boasts a rich color and robust, mouth-drying tannins. Its opaque, inky hue features a deep crimson with a vibrant purple tint. The aroma of Durif offers enticing herbal and black pepper notes. On the palate, you’ll experience a delightful blend of blueberries, blackberries, dark chocolate, plums, black pepper, espresso, menthol, mocha, and black tea.

Winemaking Technique

WMR specializes in small-batch winemaking, ensuring a low-intervention approach. All wines are crafted by hand and bottled on-site. They do not use animal products in their filtration processes, making their wines vegan-friendly. Controlled low-temperature fermentation is utilized to preserve the fruit flavors, using both cultivated and wild/natural yeasts, with minimal sulfur preservatives.

Big Hearted Wine

Recognizing the cyclical nature of economies, where downturns are as inevitable as upturns, WMR collaborate with vineyards to smooth out the fluctuations. By taking surplus produce, they add value and sell it in international markets. Instead of allowing grapes to rot on the vine, wasting a year’s labor and resources, or facing the abandonment of vineyards, Big Hearted Wine has created a unique opportunity for grape growers.
