Soul Growers The Debutant Counoise Carignan 2024
Every year, Soul Growers explores different grape varieties to see how they thrive in the stunning Barossa climate. While these small batches are usually blended, this time they discovered the ancient and rare French varietal Counoise paired with the historic Spanish variety Carignan, both sourced from a single vineyard. These two varieties were harvested together as a field blend and co-fermented in an open fermenter. The outcome is a lively, fresh, and light wine that encourages food pairing and social enjoyment, showcasing the extraordinary results that can emerge when you push the boundaries.
Counoise is a dark-skinned wine grape, it adds a peppery note and good acidity to a blended red wine, but does not have much depth of colour or tannin. Carignan is a fruit-forward red fruit and baking spice flavours, along with subtle notes of umami, make it the perfect food wine.

Sustainable Winery Practises
In their winery, grape residues are recycled for the biofuel industry through distillation, tartaric acid is recycled for the food industry, and grape seed and skin products are utilized in the health and cosmetics sectors. Grape bunch stalks are mulched and repurposed as natural compost in the vineyard, while wastewater is recycled for irrigation in a native plantation woodlot and surrounding vineyards. They also harvest rooftop rainwater for year-round use, and internal lighting energy consumption has been reduced by 30% by switching all winery lighting to LED. They have implemented smarter temperature variations for effective winery ventilation.
Wine industry suppliers are increasingly adopting sustainable practices, with comprehensive programs for everything from wine bottle label printing to using 100% recyclable glass. Additionally, their winery’s rooftop solar panels now supply over 90% of our electrical needs.
