Kooyonga Creek ‘Castle Hill’ Chardonnay 2016

Barry and Pam Saunders first planted vines on their property in North East Vic in the year 2000 as a passion project before releasing the first vintage under the name Kooyonga Chapel in 2003. Family and friends still help with the picking and pruning of the key varietals of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz which grow on the single estate vineyard. This is their second expression of Chardonnay, which was produced from fruit grown on the Castle Hill block of the estate. In 2016 they noticed that the fruit being grown on this block was extra special so decided to offer it as limited release. After fermentation the wine saw 12 months in aged French Oak, giving it plenty of body and texture. The wine is rich and creamy with aromas of juicy peach, the palate of stonefruit, honeycomb and toasty oak flavours is followed by some light butterscotch and spice. Balanced acidity rounds out the finish nicely with a long, rich, mouthfilling aftertaste.
